Our goal is to introduce audiences to great music and we do this, as we
can, in a variety of ways.
House concerts:
We typically only present one house concert a month, and we take the summer
off because there is so much free music in the area that its hard to get
people to come out for a house concert.
Public venues:
Booking public venues is not an end goal in and of itself, so we're not
looking fill dates. When we feel that Mission City Coffee Roasting or
another public venue is the right place to present a particular artist,
we will go that route and promote the show to our fullest ability.
Please do not contact us about booking at Mission City specifically...
we are not the official bookers.
In the Rounds:
Starting in 2008, we will be booking occasional casual 'in the rounds'
at our home, where we will swap songs a guest who traveling through the
Bay area, combined with another local songwriter. If you are interested,
please let us know when you're coming through and we'll see if we can
put something together. Don't be offended if we can't do it on your
schedule, however...
we also have our own gigs and family obligations to consider.
General info about
booking: It is rare for
us to book an artist that we don't already know, or haven't heard
perform live. We are currently booked through 2008. We are attending
Folk Alliance in Memphis in February 2008 and
Folk Alliance Region
West in November. If you are
showcasing at either of these conferences and you'd like us to stop by
to hear you, please let us know.
If you're interested
in performing at house concerts, take a look at
www.concertsinyourhome.com
and www.houseconcerts.org.
There are lots of good articles and information for artists there.

How to Submit
All of this being said, we
ARE always looking for new music to love. First, please take a look at
who we have presented and
who we have coming up to get an idea of whether
or not your music would fit in. Booking this series has taught us
volumes about how important it is that the presenter and the artist are
a true match for a successful house concert. It has to start with
us loving the music, as opposed to a venue owner who would start with
the number of people you can bring in.
Our tastes run toward
original music with an edge. Greg has an affinity for jazz, in addition
to a deep respect for fabulous guitarists. Bev loves rich vocals and
great songs. We truly appreciate Celtic, bluegrass and traditional folk
music, but is not our favorite. And even that doesn't mean that we would
never book a traditional folk artist. We steer away from acts that
people tell us are "entertaining," favoring true musicianship over flash
and shtick. Bottom line is, we appreciate great music that is
exceptionally written and performed, regardless of genre. The only thing
that we can safely say we will never book is a cover or tribute band.
If you want us to know more about your music, send an
email to Greg Newlon and include a
link to an EPK or other source where we can listen to your music on line. We
prefer this to having you send expensive promo packs with CDs.
We do not, however, respond to every inquiry. This doesn't mean we don't
like you, really. We listen to
everything we get. If we are interested, you will hear from us.
House Concert
Logistics
We can seat 40 at our
house concerts. For most concerts we collect a minimum $15 per person, which all
goes to the musicians. We rent chairs, set up and run sound (we have
everything from two Bose Personal Amplification Systems to a 16-channel
board with four monitor mixes). We
provide dinner for our musician guests, and a room for the night if you
need it. We have guitar strings, batteries, extra amps, cords -
just about anything you might need. We are smoke-free, drug-free,
pet-free and we don't serve alcohol at our house concerts.
In the Round
Logistics
Similar to house
concerts, but unplugged. Donations are split between the two guest
musicians. These will be held on Sunday afternoons with a
potluck at 5pm and music starting at 6pm.
Mission City
Coffee Roasting Logistics
We book directly with
the owner of this venue. There is a fee involved which we will discuss
with you during the booking process. We set up and run our own sound
system, set the room comfortably, run the door and can provide a
volunteer to cell CDs for you if you wish. We promote our shows to our
email list of 1000 names, as well as through radio, community and
regional newspapers and appropriate online resources. |
